Naughty Patty

This website is dedicated to EVERYONE who understand one of the keys to childhood development is to stimulate the imagination of their children through story telling. Every grandparent, parent and child know ” Naughty Patty ” as she has lived in the hearts of all of us at one time or another.

Welcome to the world of life lessons through stories packed with humor and basic wisdom.  Children love stories, read to them at first, and later, as their reading skills develop reading on their own. They are fascinated by stories that involve their own age group. Children form their own social groups at an early age, and see the world through the interactions between themselves and others their age group.

These series of Naughty Patty stories are designed to be personalized to the individual child, themed to significant events in their lives, and provide guidance in accepted social norms.

This story is being read to Ada,  another little girl you will find in several of the stories. When appropriate,  you can personalize this story for your child/grandchild by substituting her/his name as you read. Please feel free to copy and paste this story for your collection. You will find the children like to hear the stories over and over.

Naughty Patty and Winston the Dog

Naughty Patty is 5 years old.  She is short and stout, she has freckles on her nose and she has very red hair.  She has short, thick pigtails.  Sometimes her mama puts ribbons on her pigtails but Naughty Patty pulls them of when her mama isn’t looking.  She never has a happy look on her face.  Sometimes she looks just like Pig Won’t.

Naughty Patty, her Mama and her Daddy, were very happy and very excited.  It was a holiday.  It was Thanksgiving.  Her Aunt Hazel was coming to visit from Georgia.  Patty loved her Aunt Hazel who called her “sugah” and talked funny….she’d say things like ”y’all, come on”, or,  “I’m gonna carry you to the store!”  Patty thought….”carry me to the store, y’all?  How funny is that?”  She always brought Patty a new storybook and always had candy and gum tucked inside her big pocketbook.  Her Grandpa and her Grandma were coming too.  Grandpa was bringing his dog.  It was a big dog that looked like Trooper (Name a family dog here) .  The dog’s name was Winston.  Grandpa said the dog reminded him of when he was a boy and he had a big dog named Winston too.  Grandma did not like the dog very much. Patty’s Mama just shook her head and said, “That dog is going to be trouble, you just watch and see!” But, Patty was very happy that Winston was coming.  She thought he had a funny face—he always looked like he was smiling.  Patty thought he probably did not brush his teeth because they were yellow–big yellow teeth.  Daddy told her that dogs don’t brush their teeth like people do.  Patty liked that idea, she didn’t like to brush her teeth either.  She hoped that Winston would like her cat, Tootsie.  Tootsie looked just like a penguin.  She was black and white. She was short, and stout just like Patty, except Tootsie had a long tail. When Tootsie sat down everyone said “Oh look, that cat looks just like a penguin!”

Patty’s house was smelling very good.  Very good indeed.  The turkey was in the oven and the pies had all been baked and were sitting on the window sill to cool.  Daddy had made a big loaf of bread, and cinnamon rolls for breakfast the next morning.  Grandpa liked cinnamon rolls for breakfast.  Oh yes, the house was smelling very, very good indeed. Well…except for the squash, the green beans, the peas and carrots.  Patty did not much like vegetables.  She told her Mama, in a quite rude voice, that they should NOT be part of the Thanksgiving feast that her teacher,  Mrs. Snodgrass had told them about.  She was sure that the Indians didn’t eat vegetables.  The Pilgrims probably did not like them either. She knew that Tootsie and Winston didn’t eat vegetables.  Her mama said, “Patty, don’t be naughty already…you are not a dog.  You are not a cat.  You are not a Pilgrim or an Indian, you are a little girl who needs to eat her vegetables!”

Patty made place cards for the dining room table.  She could not remember her alphabets so she couldn’t write the names.  So instead she drew pictures of what everyone looked like.  She even drew a picture of Winston and Tootsie but she knew Mama wouldn’t let them sit at the table.

Ding dong, the doorbell rang and everyone came rushing into the house with a rustle of wind and blowing leaves, Winston was barking and Tootsie made  a loud “Meoooow” and climbed up the back of the couch and jumped up onto the TV, everyone was hugging and kissing and Auntie Hazel said “Patty, honey chil, y’all just growin’ like a weed, sugah!”  Daddy made drinks which made Grandpa happy and then the  ladies all warmed their hands on the fire.  Mama went out to the kitchen to check the turkey in the oven and declared it DONE! She sat it on the counter top and shoo’d Winston out the back door.  “Now, Patty” she said, don’t you go letting Winston back in the house.  I have a feeling that dog is up to no good today!”

Patty smiled.  Patty thought about it. What if Mama was right and Winston was up to no good.  She thought and thought about it.  Pretty soon she became…Naughty Patty! And do you know what she did?  Can you guess?  She picked up Tootsie and took her to the kitchen and closed the door.  Then she opened up the back door and Winston raced in barking. Tootsie howled and jumped up onto the kitchen counter, and arched her back like a Halloween cat! And you know what happened then?  Winston smelled the turkey.  He looked at the turkey.  He did not care about the cat anymore.  He grabbed the turkey by the leg, fast as could be, and dragged it out the open back door, across the yard and the dirt…and he wasn’t looking where he was going so he fell right into the swimming pool.  Oh my, oh my gosh!  What a sight! There was Winston, dog paddling and trying to find the step to get out of the pool and there was the turkey bobbing around in the water…until blub blub blub it sank to the bottom.  Aunt Hazel said “Lawd, have mercy!”  Grandma and Mama said “Oh bother that dog!” Grandpa looked embarrassed and helped Winston out of the pool.  Poor Daddy, he had wanted some turkey.  He looked very sad.  And…so what do you think they had for their Thanksgiving feast? Vegetables!!!  Vegetables and pie.  But, no pie for Naughty Patty.  She tried to look like Pig Will.  She made a happy face.  But no-one felt sorry for her.  Patty was sent to bed without any pie.  It was not a very happy day!  No indeed, not a very happy day at all.
